چکیده

Between 1978 and 1980, we investigated and compared the dietary intake of fish meat, platelet function, rheological properties of blood and mortality rate due to thrombotic cardiovascular diseases between the residents of fishing and farming villages. Notable finding is that the dietary intake of EPA in the residents of fishing village was nearly 3 times (2.5 g/day) higher than that (0.9g/day) in the residents of farming village. Decreased platelet aggregability, prolonged bleeding time, increased red cell deformability and decreased whole blood viscosity together with a relatively low mortality rate due to ischemic heart disease were found in the residents of fishing village, in contrast to the residents of farming village in Chiba.

Evaluating the effect of arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid on induction of adipogenesis in human adipose-derived stem cells

Objective(s): Adipose tissue is one of the most important endocrine organs that liberates many metabolic mediators such as hormones, cytokines, and chemokines. Different types of fatty acids have key roles in adipogenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two essential fatty acids, including Arachidonic acid (AA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), on ...

Effect of concomitant administration of eicosapentaenoic acid and alendronate on bone changes due to methylprednisolone in rats

One of the main limitations of glucocorticoid therapy is its negative effects on bones. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of concurrent administration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alendronate on bone changes induced by glucocorticoid treatment in rats. Thirty six male Wistar rats, who were 2.5 months of age, were divided equally into six groups and treated with normal sal...

Effects of eicosapentaenoic acid on cardiovascular events in Japanese patients with hypercholesterolemia: rationale, design, and baseline characteristics of the Japan EPA Lipid Intervention Study (JELIS).

HYPOTHESIS The principle aim of the current study is to test the hypothesis that the long-term use of highly purified EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid: 1800 mg/day), in addition to HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, is effective in preventing cardiovascular events in Japanese patients with hypercholesterolemia. BACKGROUND Epidemiological and clinical evidence suggest that intake of long-chain polyunsatur...

Efficacy of ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid in bipolar depression: randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND Epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that increased intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) alleviates unipolar depression. AIMS To examine the efficacy of EPA in treating depression in bipolar disorder. METHOD In a12-week, double-blind study individuals with bipolar depression were randomly assigned to adjunctive treatment with placebo (n=26) or with 1 g/day (n=24) or 2 g/...

Serum Eicosapentaenoic and Arachidonic Acids Concentration and Cognitive Function in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Introduction: Recent studies have shown that Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs), including Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), and Arachidonic Acid (AA), are associated with cognitive functions in patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Nevertheless, controversial results have been reported, too. The current study aimed to clarify the association of serum EPA and AA levels with cognitive decline...

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) reduces cardiovascular events: relationship with the EPA/arachidonic acid ratio.

The clinical efficacy of fish oil and high-purity eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester (hp-EPA-E) for treating cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported. Fish oil contains saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids that have pharmacological effects opposite to those of ω3 fatty acids (ω3). Moreover, ω3, such as EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), do not necessarily have the same metabolic and ...
